FAU Baseball has 6-0 win streak after Sunday’s sweep over Monmouth

March 6, 2011 -- Baseball’s Sunday sweep over Monmouth (2-4), who followed up with taking their talents to St. Boneventure’s in Western New York, had a hard time matching-up with the Owls over the weekend.

The Owls of FAU, now with a 9-3 record, with the last 6 games in a row won will next face the the Hokie’s of Virginia Tech on Tuesday the 8th of March.

There are several reasons the Owls took the sweep. Clutch hitting, sustained innings of pitching excellence and matchups in the batters box, were qualities the Owls needed.

During the final game of this three game set, the Owls put their hat on nice performances in the field also. They were only limited to 4 strike outs and a total of 8 men left on base.

Dan Scheffler who played some of his first games of the year went 2-for-4, and had 1 RBI. Backstop Mike Albaladejo went 2-for-5 and Andy Mee hit 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

FAU came out of the blocks quick with scoring twice in the first inning. By the third inning they were at it again with an additional 3 runs.

In the fifth and the eighth inning, they scored two more times sealing the victory with the approval of the fans. Colby Gratton who also went 1-for-3 and took a base on balls.

The pitching was stellar, Coach McCormack only went with three pitchers and Josh Gonzaga took the Lions share of duties, pitching 5 innings, and allowing only three hits with collecting the win.

R.J. Alvarez picked up where Gonzaga left off and pitched his own gem in 3 innings. Andy Mee collected the save, while facing three batters in the final half an inning. Of note, Alvarez in middle relief struck out five. Gonzaga also tallied 3 strike-outs to boot.
