Nick Del Guidice
Owls take a two game sweep versus the “Big Red”

With its second victory in this sweep, Florida Atlantic collected two wins for the record books in this Ivy League/Sun-Belt Conference match-up.

Tuesday and Wednesday the 23rd and 24th of this March, 2010, was the square-off date. Cornell, an Ivy League Stalwart, was trying to rub off some of that luck from the Sweet Sixteen appearance of their Basketball program.

They might have had some advantage with Tuesday night’s starter, first year Junior Taylor Everist with a 1-4 cumulative Win-Loss record this spring. However, Everist collected his second win of this mid-season on Wednesday night.

As for his four losses, scratch that up to someone who is willing stick his neck out while taking on yeoman’s duties in 2010. Oh, and did I mention Everist is only in his first year.

And yet, despite Cornell putting up five runs in the late innings, the Owls were able to fend them off with ten of their own, scattered over four innings.

As for his five innings of work, Everist gave up no runs. He struck out four batters as did Ryan Bernal in middle relief. In the very first inning, the Owls scored twice.

With Chase Vergason on second, Colby Graton singled bringing home the runner. With a Nick Del Guidice single in that same inning, Andy Mee scored on a fielder’s choice.

In odd innings three and five, the Owls scored one and two runs respectively. In the third, fourth, fifth and sixth inning, a total of six runners were left on base for the Owls.

As for the “Big Red”, a total of seven men were left on base throughout the game. In the sixth inning, FAU posted half of their runs for the game, for a total of five.

In game 2 of this set, the Owls scored 3 runs in the second inning, which turned out to be all they needed to win. Cornell waited, and scored a run in the 7th and 8th innings respectively.

Despite the “Big Red” having four more hits in the game than the Owls, FAU’s pitching and defense were the deciding factor in this victory.

R.J. Alvarez pitched four innings off flawless ball and got the win, while throwing three strikeouts. The Owls went through 6 pitchers in the game while Cornell used 4. FAU’s Jake Meirs pitched to 6 batters and threw 2 strikeouts.

As for the Home Run by Mike Albaledejo, a three run base clearing round tripper would be all that FAU needed to seal victory.
