Richardson pours in Career high 31 despite Owl's loss 2/20/2010 Troy, Alabama -- Shavar Richardson could do no wrong Saturday night in front of 2213 fans at Troy Arena. A statistic that jumps out at you is that Richardson only played 24/40 minutes in the contest. That is an average of nearly two points per minute while Richardson was in the game.
When we look at the overall field goal percentage, we see how the Owls shot from the floor -- an average of 47.6% baskets made per attempt. On the other hand we see that Troy shot a staggering 64.2% from the field.
Alex Tucker played the most minutes by any player with 37. He was also 75% from the free throw line. Other notables include Ray Taylor with 12 points and 5 assists. Brett Royster contributed with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and three blocked shots. That is 7 blocked shots within the past two games for the sophomore.
Next we see what might have been the answer to this FAU loss. Getting a contribution from all players in their respective roles is essential. In nearly all categories, FAU marked up the board except for points in the paint. Troy scored 8 more points in the paint than the Owls had. FAU also had less in 2nd chance points made.
From the bench, the Owls had 33 to Troy's 12 points, which tells us players are getting their rest when needed. It kind of seemed like the Owls may have been weary towards the end of the game. After exchanging the lead 8 times - the Owls might have gotten a bit frustrated. A case for Troy is that 5 players for the Trojans shot in double figures, compared to FAU's four.
Although the Owls scored more points in the second half than the Trojans, they may have been unable to account for the momentum swings that Troy was dishing out. One of the goals for FAU was to stop star guard Brandon Hazard of Troy, who scored 17 points in 29 minutes -- and who was 4/6 from the free throw line. Add to that his 6'11" frame, and there go your points in the paint.
Ever optimistic, Coach Mike Jarvis accounted for the loss as a lesson learned.
