ESPN 760 Radio broadcast with Coach Mike Jarvis, 6-7PM 2/15/2010
ESPN radio host Ken Lavicka spoke with Coach Mike Jarvis of Florida Atlantic University Men’s Basketball team, and Strength and Conditioning Coach Brian Remington.
Lavicka first spoke of the win against ULL. Jarvis responded that their was a great hold on the defensive side from the Owls. Late heroics from Shavar Richardson and Sanchez Hughley sealed the win in the end. Coach Jarvis went on to speak of Officiating in general and that it is a very tough job these days in College Basketball. Ken Lavicka then spoke of Alex Tucker, FAU’s lead from the point guard position. Jarvis said that Tucker could be one of the best players on the team, if not the best. Although Alex doesn’t look like a Basketball player, pound for pound he can squat a great deal of weight for his size.
Jarvis went on to say that Tucker plays to win and has always been on the winning end of Basketball games during his formative years. He also went on to say that Tucker is the smartest player on the floor.
Lavicka next inquired about shooting, and that the last game was indicative of winning basketball teams. Jarvis went on to explain that when a shot is falling at 40% from the three point line, most of the time you are going to win. When you shoot over 50% from the field, the product generally puts you in the win column. The Coach also mentioned that when your team is getting inside play as it had against ULL, you are generally going to succeed that way.
Next, strength and conditioning Coach Brian Remington was interviewed. Remington started off by saying core strength comes from the legs up and that the squat was an integral part of a work out routine. And that strength and conditioning can make stops in a basketball game. And that when you start an exercise routine, you should always start slowly. Lavicka spoke of how FAU was fortunate to have a guy like Remington. That he spend three years at the University of Buffalo followed by working at the University of Arizona. He spoke of specific body types and that there is a different way of treating a 5’5” guy and a 6’10” player. He also mentioned that Alex Tucker has a great character. He spoke of training over the summer months in preparation for this basketball season. Recovery also from game to game was mentioned as an emphasis of import, and that utilizing different modalities was a key to Strength conditioning.
After a station break, Lavicka introduced Coach Mike Jarvis once again. Lavicka mentioned that FAU was fighting for a bye in the first round of the Sun-Belt Conference Championships. They would like to be seeded number one. Lavicka mentioned that Jarvis’ roots were in Massachusetts and wondered if he was a Celtics fan. Jarvis said he was, and then Lavicka questioned the old Celtics next to the new Celtics. Jarvis said he though a Bill Russell led team was the best it ever got. You can mention Bird and McHale, or Garnet and Rondo and company, but it could never compare to a Celtics squad including Bob Cousy and Bill Russell. Lavicka next brought up FIU on the Schedule for this Thursday and that they have Troy on Saturday night. Jarvis noted the last time they played they did not control the boards well and that they are looking to take a win out of Miami. Jarvis said we will be sharper this time against FIU, and that the Panthers work real hard to stay in games. In Alabama, Jarvis noted that Troy is a run and gun offense, and we expect a tough game. Coach also mentioned how he likes the lineup he’s got now. If you would like to contact ESPN 760 during the next radio broadcast, you may ask questions by calling 888-760-3775.
