FAU Coach Mike Jarvis talks Basketball, team and the Sun-Belt Tournament 3/1/2010: Just after 6 PM on Monday night, across from the Beach in Delray, Coach Mike Jarvis kicked off his radio show with host Ken Lavicka of ESPN 760 here.
Lavicka opened with a question about the Sun-Belt Tournament being held from 3/6/10 – 3/9/10. The tournament will be held in Hot Springs, Arkansas under the roof of Summit Arena here and the Conference Center.
Traditionally, this month is called March Madness for all the festivities and clash of College Basketball teams across the country.
When asked about the season, Coach Jarvis said “the season is about a week away, and we have as good a chance as anyone else.”
Coach Jarvis considers his team of mostly freshman, to be upperclassmen as a result of having a season of College Basketball under their belt.
When asked about the most recent WKU here game, Jarvis said, “The team willed themselves to get back in that game” and “If we play them again, we’ll have a second chance at winning.”
Versus WKU, Jarvis went on to say “Our team had patience and never gave up.” FAU here took WKU into overtime after coming back from a deficit of nine points in the final minutes of the game. Although the Owl’s lost, it garnered confidence in this team.
When asked about WKU’s team, Jarvis said “most of the time when three players on a team have good potential to play professionally, that may end up being your Championship team.”
Lavicka next asked about game statistics, and Jarvis said, “A couple of stats are very important. They are your assists to turnovers and rebound differential. The last factor is free throw shooting.”
Lavicka asked about team size, to which Jarvis stated “Size is a factor, and there is always something you have to give up. The small team is the best team for now, and when going after the ball you need quickness and speed.”
When asked about the structure of the draw, Jarvis said “If we want to get into the NCAA here tournament, we have to win four games in a row on consecutive days.”
When inquired about film analysis, the Coach replied, “We don’t want to over coach or overanalyze film, it is about the players, and the players make the plays.”
