FAU Sports, a historical perspective Florida Atlantic University here first broke ground in 1961 on a piece of land of 850 acres in the east region of Boca Raton, Florida. Having campuses dotting the South Florida landscape, FAU first broke a satellite campus in Broward County in 1971.
The Davie Campus broke ground in 1984, while the John D. McArthur’s campus located in Jupiter broke in 2000. The Treasure Coast Satellite is located in Port Saint Lucie, Florida.
In 1971, the population of on campus Burrowing Owl’s which the FAU Mascot is named got designated as a sanctuary by the National Audubon society here.
Every year since the inception of Owl’s Football, have they had the “Shula Bowl here.” Both FAU and FIU square off each year for bowl season, and FAU holds a 6-1 record overall.
FAU Athletics, sports 18 different NCAA Division I here teams throughout the year. Many Scholarships are available for the student-athlete. Each campus has its own Community Foundation Scholarship Program, plus a Scholarship Search Engine and Database.
FAU has 21 Hall of Fame representatives in their ranks. Student-athletes like Whitney Kraft (Tennis), Laurence Bensimon (Swimming), Yolanda Griffith (Basketball), Mike Ryan (Baseball), Oliver Agh (Swimming, also serves as Swimming Coach at FAU), and Jared Allen (Football, also serves as Assistant for Football) place as well as others.
In addition to the Hall of Fame, several All-Americans are represented in the Owl contingent. Some include Dan Scheffler (Golf), Kris Hnat (Golf), Isabel Lardizabal (Swimming/Relay), Noemi Lung (Swimming/800 relay), Martina Schmidt (Tennis), Greg Reece (Swimming) and Mike McKenna (Baseball).
Owl’s in the Professional ranks include; four from Golf, three from Football, three from Men’s Basketball, two from Softball, two from Women’s Basketball, and one from Men’s Tennis.
