FAU takes it to Miami, Florida Baseball 7-4 In perhaps one of the most significant wins for the FAU Owls in terms of morale this season was their victory over the University of Miami’s Baseball team on Tuesday the Seventeenth of May, 2011.
With a national rank of No. 17, the Hurricane team was not expecting the Owls to give them much of a go, after last years 0-2 sweep in Coral Gables.
This week, students, fans and Staff alike were heads held high for there Institution of higher learning. U-hum, Sports too.
Jake Meirs collected the win (4-5), throwing 6.1 innings with two strikeouts. Meirs allowed seven hits and one hit batsman. He faced twenty-six batters in all with 107 pitches.
Ahmed Garcia came in for middle relief and threw an inning and 2/3rds. He saw 5 batters and threw 19 pitches.
Hugh Adams came in at the end of the game for relief and tossed one inning, faced 7 batters and threw 20 pitches.
The first markings of the game occurred in the 2nd inning by Senior Owl Nick DelGuidice, who knocked one out of the yard.
Following up on DelGuidice’s homer was Eddie Cassidy, who was walked by pitcher Steven Ewing of the Hurricane’s. Ewing threw 4 innings and was scored upon 3 times.
Cassidy moved to second on a Bukovich single, and Mike Albaledejo walked, moving Cassidy along to third. A sacrifice fly from Andy Mee brought Cassidy home. Score 3-0 FAU.
We notice that Ewing gave up only two hits in the inning, but the Owls capitalized on the walks that Steven Ewing tossed. Control issues at this level may be more prevalent as compared to say, Major League Baseball. Just a thought.
FAU struck again in the following inning with a Home Run by Raymond Church.
In the 4th inning, two men were left on base, and one hit was marked in the books for Sean Bukovich. By the end of the inning, Javi Salas took the mound down 3 runs.
Salas didn’t last long as he gave up 2 runs on two hits. Following Salas was Adam Sargent who pitched two innings and gave up similar numbers.
Sargent allowed two runs in two innings.
In the eighth, FAU knocked some more cowhide around, and collected two runs off of the bat from Sean Bukovich and Albaledejo. FAU had only 5 innings where they were left scoreless. The Owls used three pitchers and UM used 5. Final score 7-4 FAU.
