A discussion with Director of Athletics Craig Angelos of Florida Atlantic University

On a Friday afternoon, I had the pleasure of talking with the Director of Athletics at Florida Atlantic University. When asked Mr. Angelos mentioned that FAU has 18 sports, and 20 including Cheer and Dance.

The Owls sport 500 Athletes with a 15 million dollar Budget. They have three components to the Budget. They include Personnel Costs, Scholarship and Operational Costs.

Scholarships are responsible for a great portion of the budget. In addition, Director of Athletics Angelos said “Dealing with the budget is challenging with a program our size, and that we have 28,000 students like your University of Miami’s and Florida State’s.

Director Angelos also noted the Stadium project. He mentioned that the project is a rare opportunity, as we are a new University. Compared to some Schools who have been around for a hundred years or so, FAU is accomplishing much. They opened in 1961 and branched out in 1971.

Mr. Angelos mentioned "we also get our money from Corporate sales."

Mr. Angelos has been with FAU for 7 ½ years and was hired in 2003 by former FAU President Frank Brogan. When asked about expectations, Director Angelos said “I can use influence, but not control as an Athletics Director.”

Angelos mentioned that influence can mean hiring the best Coaches and student athletes possible. "With that, we can expect the best, such as Conference Championships and beyond. This means playing more after the regular season has finished."
